Random Number Range Analyzer

Honest range analysis: how many integers a range holds and the chance of any one of them.

Quick answer

  • Formula: Count = Max − Min + 1; Chance of any single value = 1 ÷ Count
  • Worked example — Integers in the range: 6 (full example below).

Worked example result
Integers in the range6
Chance of any single value16.67%
Chance as a decimal0.166667
Range width (max − min)5

The range 1 to 6 — one ordinary die — contains exactly 6 integers, so any single face has a 1 in 6 chance: about 16.67%.

Choosing a number uniformly at random from a range is only fair if you know what the range contains. This analyzer does the honest, deterministic part of that job: it counts exactly how many integers lie between your minimum and maximum (inclusive), and works out the probability of any single one of them being picked.

It deliberately draws no number for you — a truly random pick cannot be checked or reproduced, while these figures can. Use the count and the per-value chance to judge raffles, dice ranges, lottery-style draws and random sampling fairly.

The formula

Count = Max − Min + 1; Chance of any single value = 1 ÷ Count

Worked example

The range 1 to 6 — one ordinary die — contains exactly 6 integers, so any single face has a 1 in 6 chance: about 16.67%.

Frequently asked questions

Why doesn't this calculator pick a random number for me?

Because a picked number cannot be verified — you would have no way to know it was drawn fairly or even at random. The count and odds, by contrast, are exact. Any dice app or the random function in a spreadsheet can make the actual draw once you know the range is right.

Why is the count max − min + 1, not max − min?

Both endpoints are included. From 1 to 6 there are 6 values (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6), not 5 — the +1 accounts for the starting value itself.

What are the odds for a 1-to-100 draw?

Exactly 100 values, so each single value has a 1% chance. Any specific value is unlikely, but the chance of landing somewhere in a block of 10 values is 10%.
