Square Footage Calculator

Area in square feet and square meters for rectangles, triangles, circles and trapezoids.

Quick answer

  • Formula: Rectangle L × W · Triangle (Base × Height) ÷ 2 · Circle πr² · Trapezoid ((a + b) ÷ 2) × Height; Sq m = Sq ft × 0.092903
  • Worked example — Area: 120.00 sq ft (full example below).

A 12 × 10 ft room is 120 sq ft, which is 11.15 sq m. A circle with a 5 ft radius covers 78.54 sq ft.

Pick the shape, enter its dimensions in feet, and get the area in both square feet and square meters — the starting number for flooring, paint, tile, sod and most other material estimates.

For a circle, enter the radius (half the diameter). For a trapezoid — a shape with two parallel sides of different lengths — enter both parallel sides and the distance between them as the width. Irregular areas are best split into these basic shapes and added together.

The formula

Rectangle L × W · Triangle (Base × Height) ÷ 2 · Circle πr² · Trapezoid ((a + b) ÷ 2) × Height; Sq m = Sq ft × 0.092903

Frequently asked questions

How do I measure an L-shaped room?

Divide it into two rectangles, calculate each area separately, and add them. Measure wall to wall and keep units in feet (convert inches by dividing by 12).

How do I convert square feet to square meters?

Multiply by 0.092903. A 120 sq ft room is about 11.15 sq m. To go the other way, divide square meters by 0.092903 — or multiply by 10.764.

Should I round up when ordering materials?

Yes — the area here is exact and net. Material calculators add waste for cuts and breakage on top; for flooring and tile, ordering 10% over the net area is the standard rule of thumb.
